Hawaiian Scrolls, 2011, fiber and metal, approx. 3 x 10 feet x 2 inches

During their exhibition 9769 Radio Drive at The Contemporary Museum, Hawaii, Steven and William Ladd organized a Scrollathon with multiple Hawaiian student groups in January and February of 2011. Collaborating with their local communities, participants embarked on a mission of transforming textile waste into art objects, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility. The materials for this project were sourced from an old Brooklyn factory, Bromeliad plants from the museum grounds, and an“aloha print” fabric representing the students’ cultural background. Each participant first created a personal scroll to keep as a memento of their immersive experience. Then, working collaboratively, they created an installation of scrolls which was hung outside the museum entrance, showcasing the power of their combined voices to create a visual artwork that all visitors can enjoy. To commemorate their involvement, each participant’s photograph, along with an image of their individual scroll, was created to document their involvement. Following the Scrollathon, students were guided through the Ladd’s exhibition, gaining insight into Steven and William’s utilization of scrolls in their own artistic endeavors. Concluding the tour, students created their own scroll drawings for display in the Education Gallery.
