Collaboration with 100+ participants

Mingei Scrollscape, 2014, cardboard, fiber, pins, rubberbands, 34 1/4 x 23 3/8 x 1 3/4 inches

In conjunction with their 2014 exhibition “Steven and William Ladd: Function + Fantasy” at Mingei International Museum, Steven and William Ladd orchestrated a unique Scrollathon involving a variety of San Diego communities. Delving into the archives of the museum, the Ladds discovered unused rolls of handwoven fabric fortuitously awaiting purpose. Combined with trimming fabric sourced from The Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn, NY, this treasure trove offered brand new raw material for scroll-making!

Student groups, docents, and members of the broader Mingei community were invited to explore the Ladds’ exhibition before gathering for their customized Scrollathon sessions. Participants each crafted an individual scroll (kept as a personal artifact), contributed individually to the Collaborative Masterwork (fostering a sense of collective creativity), and had their portrait created to document their involvement in a complex artistic endeavor.
